7/22/19 I wrote ‘Open Mind’ post and decided to do an experiment – for a month 7/21-8/20, I’d intentionally choose something new or do differently…
I’ve done many different things, e.g.
- Summer concerts: enjoying the symphony by the river park and watching people dancing in the city center plaza.
- Island getaway: joining my cousin & family for a weekend at an island, chatting with neighbors at the summer party, and writing on the beach head in the early morning.
- Special food: tried durian cake, African red rice and spinach intestine stew, dream ramen, Korean fried chicken, French pastries, Spanish tapas, clay pot rice…
- New experiences/ learning: started ‘UncoverSpecial’ blog, presented proposals at work, visited 3 Toastmaster club meetings, and joined a writer retreat, a community radio show, improv meetup, etc.
Looking back, all beautiful memories but at the time, it was a mixed bag. Sometimes, I was nervous (e.g. presented proposal to executives), other times, I didn’t know what I supposed to do (e.g. participated in improve) or I really didn’t feel like going (e.g. took 1hr subway after work to join events), yet they all turned out fine and often, great. I feel more comfortable and excited to try more and do new things. Stretching expands the comfort zone.
I’m very fortunate not only to be where I am and have what I have but also who I am, naturally curious & optimistic and genuinely caring & inclusive. I love diversity, I’m grateful for the people and opportunities in my journey, and I’m excited about the future!
