Today is my roommate Stan’s birthday. I thought to get lunch to celebrate but he was busy on the phone. I changed to plan B: make croissant (as he loves it) and give him a ‘surprise’. I pulled the little piece of trigger and the cylinder ‘pop-open’, what a cool packaging. I pulled out the dough, spread it like a sheet, cut along the line into 8 triangles, rolled, and bent slightly to C-shape then put them on a tray into the oven….in a few minutes, 8 crispy, shiny brown, puffy croissants came out. I chose 2 fat ones, put on a plate, and dropped by my roommate who was still on the call. He got off a few minutes later, we chatted briefly then he went on another call.
I quietly went out. It was raining so I drove to Whole Food. I wanted to get the mango mousse cake which I enjoyed a few months back and mango is Stan’s favorite fruit. It’s a double celebration for his birthday and his girlfriend Megan being accepted to a dental program. However, there was no mango cake, so I chose a chocolate ganache cake instead, another flavor he likes. His girlfriend likes sweet. I hope she enjoys it as well. I asked the bakery staff to write their names and best wish on top of the cake.
I handed the brown bag to my roommate. When he opened it, his eyes went wide open, for a second, he couldn’t say a word then he burst into smile, ‘you are sosososo sweet…’ He gave me a big hug. ‘I’m happy for you and Megan, what a perfect timing for a double-celebration…’ I said. We both smiled and went back to works. I was on the call with mom around 10PM when I heard him wrap-up and headed out to girlfriend’s place for the weekend. It’s hard that he worked so late on his birthday, yet as he joked, ‘skip dinner, go straight to dessert’, enjoy and best wish, Stan & Megan!
