另類元宵 Alternative Lantern Festival

Traditional Chinese New Year (CNY) lasts for 2 weeks and wraps up in 元宵節 (lantern Festival). When I grew up, my parents bought my sister and I 燈籠 (denglong); we walked around the neighborhood as well as going to the temple and燈會 (lantern ceremony) with it. And I love 湯圓 (tangyuan), bigger sticky rice ball filled with sesame paste or peanut butter and smaller ball w/o stuffing in a red bean jujube soup (see image 1) or 酒酿 (jiunlang, see image 2).

L: I made in 2016. R: I finally found after calling several restaurants in 2019

This year due to precation of coronavirus, I didn’t go to China Town or Chinese grocery store so I missed tangyuan L yet I got a special invitation from uncle to have an Italian dinner (see image) instead. What a feast! We had shrimp scampi over linguine, chicken parmigiana, sausage cacciatore, pilaf rice, baked potato, veggie, salad, and clam chowder….we were more than stuffed and left-over could serve a few more meals. When we came out of the restaurant, a cold and clear night, and I saw a big full moon on the sky. No family reunion yet I wish my and all families around the world well, especially those who had a tough start~ 鼠來寶,年年好!
