Standout

Mom read about Sunny Hills‘s pineapple cake and suggested us to try it out. It’s in an area of old brick buildings (home to culinary, art shops converted from old warehouse by the harbor). The staffs warmly greet us when we walk in and quickly bring a tray with a warm cup of tea and a ‘full’ pineapple cake in the wrap.

The presentation stands out right away, (1) shape: a longer thinker rectangle vs. typical shorter fatter one, (2) wrapper: cream color wax-paper with simple brand name/ logo on the front vs. other brands usually in colorful shiny wrap with a pineapple image. (3) sampling: a full pineapple cake vs. cut little piece or none; (4) package: 10 or 16pc in a minimalist compact paper box and a reusable cloth bag vs. typically highly decorative, colorful paper box and bag with a huge brand logo.

SunnyHills pineapple cake + tea

I opened the wrapper and had a bite of the pineapple cake. The inside is also different, you can see strings of pineapple and it’s less sweet. Though it’s more expensive than most pineapple cakes in the market, almost everybody we who had ‘free’ sample bought at least 1 box.

What makes Sunny Hills standout are ‘authentic’ (100% pineapple vs. stuffed with sugar) ingredients and ‘cleaver’ marketing, a good story to all (customers, maker, environment, competitors)~
