Several people (friends and strangers on Linkedin) asked me about how to change career across industries. So far I’ve spent 16+ years around the globe working in 5 industries (consumer, tech/ software, personal care, consulting, education) with 3 startups and 3 multi-national companies. Here are 3 suggestions…
1) To find what’s relevant experiences and transferable skills. For example, communication, teamwork, strategic thinking are valuable in many industries.
2) Tell your story by specific examples. “STAR” is a good framework (Situation, Task, Actions, Results). What’s the situation? What’s your task/ role? what actions have you taken and what’s the result? especially focusing on the “result”, what impacts/ difference have you made?
3) Think of what unique skills, experiences, strengths you can add to the team. Diversity brings innovations and growth. Show people you love to learn, collaborate well, and will deliver results by proven track record.
With above 3, you will increase the opportunities to land a great job in a new field/ industry. Remember, always be open-minded, helpful, and grateful! Give first!
