I heard from a friend that her daughter left US for Taiwan on vocation. She said she was worried at first about the risk of long flight yet her daughter, a busy consultant was close to ‘burn-out’ if not taking a break and because the Covid cases in US, most countries don’t welcome American visitors. Her daughter who loves Taiwan bought a “bunny suit” for the flight…On her flight from Boston to NYC, everybody looked at her as if she came from another planet. On the later international flight, many others were also “dressed-up” for the long haul.
Life in Taiwan has been back to normal for a while though many people still wear masks (good protection from pollution and flu anyway). People have learned a hard lesson 17 years ago with SARS so this time, early intervention and stricter guidance have saved lives. International visitors to Taiwan need 14 days quarantine. If you have elders (65+) in your family, you need to quarantine in designated hotel for 2 weeks before clearance. My friend has an apartment in Taipei (nobody lives in) so her daughter quarantines there while working remotely. She said her daughter enjoyed the delivery food and was looking forward to starting her vacation soon.
I thought ‘what a great idea; I could do so as well’. I shared with mom but she thought it’s risky for the travel and suffering to be “stuck” at hotel for 2 weeks. I explained I can get a “bunny suit”, find a clean and safe quarantine hotel (Taiwanese government also subsidizes the cost), and work (I won’t be bored) before taking off for the rest of the year (bonus of Covid to be able to work remotely and save-up all vacation days). I will have room service (food & cleaning) everyday, how nice! Also, I can exercise in the room, just like I do at home in cold or raining days.
I tried three times, calls and email. Mom thank me to “overcome” the hurdles to visit them yet she strongly advised me not to…in spite of wanting to see me: she asked my photos and looked forward to video chat.
What is love? Love is to be creative and brave to find solution over challenges. Love is to care about one another even more than ourselves. Love is always with us without distance~
