Be Cynical or Be Grateful?

One of the tenants invited me for lunch at a local new restaurant and offered to help out cleaning up the leaves in the backyard. How lovely! I thought it may be her way to say thank you as I took her out to celebrate her new job 2 months back and bought a new microwave when the previous one came to end of its life.

We chatted and enjoyed the food…she mentioned wanting to bring her mom over. She is looking for a new place and asked if she could find a good sublet. She is the only child and her mom and dad live separately. He mom seems to have health condition.

One could be cynical about the motive of the lunch and help out. I chose to be grateful  – to have her as a thoughtful and helpful tenant and friend. I’m glad she wants to take care of her mom, a value that’s irreplaceable by Ivy League education or success. I wish her and mom well!
