Prof. Hwang is different in many ways. He ran a tech company while teaching at the university. He emphasized more on the application than the theory in the class.
After I returned from Finland as exchange student, I worked at Prof. Hwang’s company while finishing up the last few classes. I led five-person team in conducting research and software testing for M-News for Pharmaceutics. We analyzed industry and targeted potential customers in four categories: pharmaceutical companies, clinical research organizations, healthcare providers and drug sales channels. I also created pricing model, strategies, and multi-channel promotions/sales for international marketing. It has expanded my learning to multiple aspects of business beyond technology and prepared me for the MBA study in US.
I kept in touch with Prof. Hwang and had a lovely reunion in one of my trips home. Prof. Hwang retired in 2009 and devoted to promote local farming and writing. In 2012, he started Turtle Taiwan project in his hometown, Changhua to do agriculture experiments and increase famers’ livelihood. First product was blueberry, usually imported and pricy. Meanwhile, he published a book, “Free teacher: teach people instead of lesson” (讓老師自由:教人不教書).
In 2020, Prof. Hwang and Turtle Taiwan launched Quinoa cake. Again, not a traditional crop yet a super grain of high value and nutrition. I ordered the cake for family and friends and people loved it. It became my mom’s favorite cake, more nutrition and less sugar. Later Chia seed and Amaranth grain were added on the “treasure” menu. Also, Turtle Taiwan published the 1st book of “Philosophy of Long-term care” (長照心理學) in Taiwan emphasizing long-term care starts with heart.
Education also starts with heart. Thanks and best wish to Prof. Hwang to continue teaching practical education to spread health, wellness, and knowledge!
