What is Fulfillment?

What is fulfillment to you?
Is it wealth, recognition, prestige—or something simpler?

On my birthday, I found fulfillment not in celebration, but in caring…

Dad left early for his aunt’s funeral out of town. I stayed home with Mom, who recently had foot surgery. In the afternoon, I took her to see the doctor.

When we saw the doctor, Mom poured out her story: the first few days at home were fine, but one night the pain became unbearable. Dad opened the bandage and saw the surgical needle holding the bone had shifted. Unsure what to do, he gently pushed it back. The pain eased, and Mom managed to sleep. He booked the next available appointment.

The doctor listened patiently, calmed Mom, and asked us to get an X-ray immediately. Later, she reassured us: “Your bone and wounds look good. I’ll remove the needle.” She offered to take out the stitches early, but Mom chose to wait until the scheduled date. The doctor removed the needle, showed me how to wrap the bandage, and ordered another X-ray for the next visit. Relief washed over us.

That evening, as I ate dinner with Mom and Dad—no cake, no celebration—I felt warm and grateful. I realized the meaning of 『施比受更有福』: Giving is more blessed than receiving. Fulfillment is being present with those we love, caring for them, and achieving a positive outcome together.
