I came across the Cambridge Improv Incubator on Meetup. I’m curious and decided to check it out. I thought it’d be “teach ‘n learn” but it’s actually “learning by doing”. We started with adjective + name + action + sound, e.g. jumping Jane jump (action) shut! (sound), one-by-one in circle and everybody repeated. We then tune up ‘n down of the energy level to 10 and 1 (started at 5). It ‘clicked’ later that as in life, we learn to tune up ‘n down of our energy. For me, naturally highly energetic, I’m learning to tune ”down” and “pause” sometimes…
The rest of evening, we went through different exercises, e.g. freeze and change the story, pair-up to act and sound, guess the words by actions, etc. I volunteered to be the “sound” in one act. It was fun and odd at the same time because I didn’t know what others (2 actors and 1 sound) would do or whether sound should follow the act or lead the act. Regardless, we had a good time together.
I admire not only the creativity and talents but also the courage of people to participate. Dare to create may be the essence of improve. I’m glad to try it!
